It is so hot here in Tokyo.
As I mentioned, I bought my first "shorts" for 10 years.
Today, I would like to write about an item that I have worn so often since I started my "shorts life".
Vintage Boro Device Strap
Our "Vintage Boro Device Strap" is manually made by women at Otsuchi Sashiko Project.
The above photo shows Kaori-san and Sasaki-san from Otsuchi Sashiko, taken during the recent Sashiko workshop at our store.
Before COVID, they gathered one place to do Sashiko, but COVID changed the situation. They couldn't do Sashiko together to prevent infection. More worse, their work had cut back drastically...Of course we had a tough time because our supply chain was messed up. We were impossible to keep producing new clothing as we had done before.
Considering the situation, we started making these straps with them. Braiding Boro remnants together to make it could be done at their homes. It meant that we could keep working together.
We heard that they could buy toys and candies to their grand children even in the COVID time, which made us so happy! The strap made our relationship stronger like the strap itself, fragile Boro strips can be stronger when they braided together.
Well, let's move on to the ways I wear them recently.
Bracelet
During the COVID I used it for strap for a a mask, but I don't wear masks any more. Since then, I stopped wearing the strap and kept it in my home...However, I started wearing it as a bracelet lately.
The strong summer sun emphasizes the contrast of the indigo-dyed Boro, making it perfect for simple coordination in Summer.
It is not only a fashion item but also can be an amulet like "Kumihimo amulet" appeared in a movie called "YOUR NAME." because it is manually braided by women at Otsuchi Sashiko with positive energy!
Strap for glasses (eyewear retainer)
Since the straps come with attachments for glasses, it can be used as eyewear retainer. It is super convenient in summer.
The length can be adjusted by the adjuster.
I guess I'll use it as a mask strap in next spring because I have terrible hay fever...
Others use it to hang keys or a phone around necks, wrap it around waists like a belt, or connect it to the brim of hats and shirt to keep them from flying off etc...
