Holding an Installation "秘色-Hisoku-" by TODO

Sculptor TODO's installation "秘色-Hisoku-" will be held from Sat, May 20 to Tue, June 6, 2023.

Hi, this is Shohei. Today, I would like to introduce the installation that will open this weekend, as well as the collaborative products produced in conjunction with the installation.

TODO, sculptor

Jet Black Stone- Abekawa stone (Shizuoka), Laminated glass

Todo structured his style mainly with various forms of things collected by walking, on the theme of "uniqueness of place.” On the cut fragments from places around the world, Todo embedded glass between them.

As you might remember this but, first time we met Mr. TODO was the time of the shooting for our SPRING/SUMMER 2022 "Colors of Light" collection.

Colors of Light

The season's concept and Mr. TODO's work matched, so we asked him to loan us his work, and he gladly did. Since then, Mr. Todo and Ishibashi, designer of KUON have remained friends, going out for drinks whenever their schedules allow.

This installation project has been in progress between these two artists for some time. We hope you will visit the exhibition, which is more powerful than the first one.

"秘色-Hisoku-"

This is the second time for TODO to have an installation at KUON Flagship Store. The first one was held in early 2022, titled "On-site works_KUON".

This time it its titled "秘色-Hisoku-".

What's "Hisoku"? It is a name of a traditional color of Japan. It is the color like this↓

Hisoku

Regarding the laminated glass of TODO's works as "Hisoku", a traditional color of Japan, numerous gems and curios collections related to unpublished works and secret colors are scattered throughout the store.

藤堂 秘色This work, which sits in the Japanese-style room, is made of a very rare piece of rock. It is made in such a way that it changes its appearance depending on the way light enters the room and the angle from which it is viewed, giving it a mysterious aura.

I will tell you the details at the store, but since it is a special rock, it should bring you good luck if you make it your phone's standby screen. Please feel free to take photos when you visit here.

In addition to his works, there are many of his personal collection on display. You will feel as if you are peeking inside Mr. TODO's head.

Only purchased people will know what it looks.

関守石
"Sekimori-Ishi"-Hakone

A collaborative work created with precious stones and laminated glass collected by Mr. TODO from various places in Japan, bound with strings braided from old cloth and leftover fabrics of KUON.

Sekimori-Ishi is a kind of barrier stone put on a stepping stone path or nobedan pavement in a tea garden to warn the guests against taking the wrong path.

鳩時計

I look forward to hear the sound of the Cuckoo Clock.  Plus, the lucky pigs are back in the store, please find them!

TODO
There are always stories of "Time" behind Todo's artworks. The artist structured his style centered with various forms of things collected by walking on the theme of "uniqueness of place." The most representative artwork would be the ones he made during his stay in German, and the cutting stone artworks from historical sites in various countries around the world, with polishing and embedding glass between them. The Basalt series uses the lined pillar made of basalt for installation which the artist got inspiration from Joseph Beuys's 7000 oaks and basalt installation that he saw at Documenta 7. Moreover, his book series use books of western philosophy, novel, bible and hymns to create artworks by two methods: inserting glasses between books or solidifying the pages with resin. Todo's works are a combination of what he felt about Western European civilization during his staying at Düsseldorf for more than 10 years, and of Japanese sense of beauty. His recent years after moving back to Japan, Todo is creating artworks using debris from famous building built during high economic growth period in Japan but were destroyed for Olympics, with same techniques.
